Anti-Glare Screen/Computer Screen Magnifier
by Shirley
(Dublin, Ireland)
I am 45 yo and have MD - WET type.
I want to purchase an anti glare screen for my computer. Do you recommend any particular type or brand?
Kind Regards,
Shirley

Hi Shirley,
MaxiAids makes a computer screen magnifier that also reduces glare.
The screen easily attaches to the top of the computer monitor. The good news is that this screen reduces glare, blocks UV rays, and has antireflection. It fits 14"-17" Monitors.
It also magnifies approximately 2x. They will ship internationally. The bad news is that it will not fit flat screens.

Screen Magnifier
by D
Leslie,
I wonder if you are familiar with this magnifier, which I use on my computer.
You might have mentioned it in the past. If not, look at it and see what you think about it:
http://magnifier.sourceforge.net
It is best to have the magnifier icon permanently on the taskbar, so one just clicks on it and moves the magnifier to what one wants to read. My MD has also made longhand writing a major issue, so using the computer to write is a boon and I say this as someone who as published stuff in the past.
One of the most difficult things I encounter is not being able to read lots of things, not because of the size of the print but because of the lurid colour schemes so many newspapers, magazines and internet sites have.
One of the very worst, in my experience, is the black on grey tabs Windows uses for so many things. Grey for MD sufferers is anathema. I don't think the Windows people have given this much thought, if any at all.
For macular degeneration sufferers there is, I think, nothing to beat bold black on pure white, not newspaper white, which is yellowish.
All good wishes. Keep the flag flying.

Adjusting Contrast on my Computer
by Judy
Excellent article on What is the Best Macular Degeneration Magnifier?
Fortunately, at the moment I seldom need a magnifier. However do you have any ideas on reading websites? I have trouble when there is little contrast such as a light colored background and light colored printing. Thank you
Hi Judy,
I'm glad you are not in need of a magnifier as it is easier to read without one. Some websites use color combinations that are difficult to read, especially for those with macular degeneration.
The more contrast the better. There are ways for you to not only adjust the contrast on your monitor you can also actually change the colors of your computer screen and websites. There are three ways of doing this:
1. Computer Monitor
Adjusting contrast using the computer monitor panel. Most monitors have some display buttons on the monitor where you can adjust the contrast and brightness. Try this first as it is the easiest way to make changes.
2. Accessibility Wizard
If you use Windows go to Accessibility Wizard where you can change font size. Then you have the option of selecting, "I am blind or I have difficulty seeing things on the screen." You will go through a couple of screens on sizes of things and then you will get the option of "Select the color scheme you want." You will see four options of
Current color scheme High contrast #1 High contrast #2 High contrast Black High contrast White
Try different contrast schemes to see which one works best for you.
3. Control Panel
Go to Accessibility Options. Select Display tab on the top. Check High Contrast and then click on Settings where you will get a list of maybe 25 different color schemes. Again play around with them until you find the one best for you.
I just tried this on a website that had a black background and a dull yellow color for wording that was not easy to read. Since I have made several adjustments - and I did it in all three of these places mentioned above - it now has a white background and black letters and much easier to read.
Hope this helps you. Can't live without the computer can we. If you spend a lot of time on it, it will be worth it to try these different settings to reduce your eye strain.

Monitor Screen Magnifier
by Tracy Marshall
(UK)
I purchase equipment for our IT department for a construction comapny in the UK. I need to source a magnifying screen for a laptop for a gentleman who has macular degeneration. However, I cannot find a company in the UK that does them. Can you help.
Regards, Tracy
Answer Hi Tracy,
There are two different options for your employee. Either an attachable laptop computer screen magnifier or magnifying software.
An attachable monitor is limited to 3X magnification, whereas magnifying software can magnify up to 36x.
Usually macular degeneration progresses, so the option to increase the magnification will be important. Software also can be adjusted for contrast and brightness. Zoomtext is one of the most common softwares used by people with low vision, like macular degeneration. To learn more about the different kinds of magnifying software go to:
