Antioxidant Fruits

Antioxidant fruits provide protection from free radical damage. Berries offer some of the highest ORAC scores.

Free radicals damage our bodies at the cellular level. Antioxidants help keep our bodies in oxidative balance so there is less damage to the cell membrane and the DNA. Free radical damage is a key player in aging and many degenerative diseases like macular degeneration.

Orac Score

The antioxidant activity of food can be measured in the blood. Each food is given an ORAC Score value. ORAC is short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.

According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service, eating foods with a high ORAC value can:

1) Raise the antioxidant power of human blood,

2) Prevent some loss of long-term memory and learning ability in middle-aged rats,

3) Maintain the ability of brain cells in middle-aged rats to respond to a chemical stimulus, and

4) Protect rats' tiny blood vessels—capillaries—against oxygen damage.

There is lots of good research that validates the benefits of antioxidant activity. As a result many people have started taking antioxidant health supplements. Before you decide to do this it is important to know what to look for. Click here to read more: Antioxidant Health Supplements

Antioxidant Benefits

Eating antioxidant rich food offers many benefits over supplementing with single, isolated antioxidants. They are:

1) Provide many cofactors and combination of nutrients that offer more protection than a single, isolated nutrient.

2) Offer a slow release and steady and more sustained protective effect. Supplements often result in a brief spike in blood plasma antioxidant levels.

Ronald L. Prior, who does research at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, informs us that the ORAC values of fruits and vegetables vary greatly. He states "you can pick seven with low values and get only about 1,300 ORAC units. Or, you can eat seven with high values and reach 6,000 ORAC units or more. One cup of blueberries alone supplies 3,200 ORAC units."

Fruits High in Antioxidants

Berries offer the highest ORAC values for fruit.

ORAC Units per 100 Grams (about 3 1/2 ounces)

Fruits:

Prunes 5570

Raisins 2830

Blueberries 2400

Blackberries 2036

Strawberries 1540

Raspberries 1220

Plums 949

Oranges 750

Red Grapes 739

Cherries 670

Kiwi 602

Prunes? What a surprise to me. I guess it would be good idea to add these antioxidant fruits in our diet. We have planted 6 blueberry bushes and maybe next spring we will actually get some fruit so we can benefit from the powerful antioxidant activity from these berries.
