Choroidal Neovascularization
Macular degeneration is a progessive disease of the retina. The progression is different for each person. It can be very slow and take many years or it can turn quickly and develop into advanced or
wet macular degeneration.
Everyone who has wet macular degeneration had dry macular degeneration first.
Three Stages of Dry AMD
Dry AMD has three stages, all of which may occur in one or both eyes: 1)
Early AMD
- Several small
drusen
or a few medium-sized drusen in one or both eyes. No symptoms and no vision loss 2) Intermediate AMD - Many medium-sized
drusen
or one or more large drusen in one or both eyes. May have a
blurred spot
in the center of your vision. More light may be needed for reading and other tasks. 3) Advanced AMD - is either √ a break-down of
light-sensitive cells
and supporting tissue in the central retinal area (advanced dry form), or √ abnormal and fragile blood vessels under the retina (wet form). To read more about wet macular degeneration click here:

Symptoms of Advanced AMD
√ Several large
drusen
√ Breakdown of
light sensitive cells
and supporting tissue in the central retinal area. √ This breakdown can cause a
blurred spot
in the center of your vision. √ Detailed tasks such as reading and writing becomes more difficult Because this is a progressive disease the blurred spot may get bigger and darker, involving more of your central vision.
Advanced Macular Degeneration Treatment Options
There are several treatment options, all of which involve preventing further loss of vision. The goal of these treatments is to preserve what vision is left and does not restore lost vision.
