Zeaxanthin - Carotinoid, Cone Cells and Clarity

Hello

Zeaxanthin - Carotinoid, Cone Cells and Clarity

Last week's newsletter talked about the importance of two antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin for macular pigment density. These two carotenoids make up the macular pigment. We found out that a low macular pigment density means that a person is at higher risk for developing age related macular degeneration.

The macula is better protected when the macular pigment is more dense.

Cone Cells

Zeaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that is not only found in the macular pigment, it is also found in the cone cells.

Guess where cone cells are found and how they function? Cone cells are concentrated in the fovea - the center of the macula, while most rod cells are found outside the macula. Lutein is concentrated in the rod cells which are used for our peripheral vision while zeaxanthin is concentrated in the cone cells.

The function of cone cells is to give us sharp, detailed vision. Vision that is clear and distinct, not blurry or smudged.

Zeaxanthin Food Source

The body however cannot make or manufacture these antioxidants. The two ways the body can get antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin are through food or supplements or both.

Many vitamins for eyes contain zeaxanthin and lutein, but there is also a food source that is considered one of the "top ten Superfoods" that is especially rich in zeaxanthin.

Organic goji berries are surprisingly one of the most nutrient dense foods. Dr. Lylas Mogk, the author of Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight writes about these berries and some of the research that has been conducted by Mark O.M. Tso, M.D., D. Sc., at Wilmer Eye institute of Johns Hopkins with goji berries. She suggests that these berries become a part of your macular degeneration diet because they are a great food source for zeaxanthin.

Food is the preferable source of nutrients because of the many co-factors and other nutrients that come with it. Find out how you can easily start incorporating these berries in your macular degeneration diet to supply your body with one of the best sources of zeaxanthin:
