More than Magnifiers October 13, 2009 |
Hello More than MagnifiersDid you know that there are a lot more visual aids for macular degeneration than magnifiers? As your macular degeneration progresses you will find that performing certain tasks or hobbies will become more frustrating because you lack that sharpness of vision or you may have lost some of your central vision.
One of the tasks that frustrated my father-in-law was not being able to see the numbers on his tire pressure gauge when he check the pressure on his tires (he doesn't drive any more - but my mother-in-law does). To his delight, he found a talking tire pressure gauge. Now, he can continue this task like he's always done for more than 60 years. This is a good example of learning to adjust and to adapt to this retinal disease. Identify a task that you are finding frustrating and then do some research to find out if there is way you can do it differently or with the help of a visual aid. Do you like to cook? Use measuring cups with bold, big numbers. Finding it hard to tell the time? Get a talking watch. Trouble writing a check? Use a check writing guide.
