Why You Need a Retina Specialist
April 20, 2010
Hello

Why You Need a Retina Specialist

Why do you need a retina specialist? Maybe you have never even wondered about finding a retina specialist because you were never referred to one or told to see one.

That has been the case for my father-in-law who has wet macular degeneration. Although he frequently has his eyes checked by ophthalmologists, he has never gone to see a retina or macular degeneration specialist.

His eye doctors never referred him to one and although I've suggested it, it seems that since his eye doctors never referred him he has never taken that extra step.

See a Retina Doctor

Why should you go to a retina doctor if you've been diagnosed with macular degeneration?

Retina specialists have had special training in retina diseases and usually only see patients who have age related or juvenile macular degeneration, retinal tears, macular edema, or macular puckers.

He/she is an ophthalmologist who has done an extra fellowship training in retinal diseases for one or two years after completing his residency in ophthalmology.

The Retina Fellowship is an intensive program treating only patients with retina problems and learning how to perform office based surgeries like laser and intraocular injections as well as hospital based surgeries like vitrectomies.

So if you want to know what your macular degeneration treatment options are it is important that you make an appointment with a retina specialist. Depending on your insurance you may or may not need a referral.

Don't wait for your doctor to suggest it. You can click on the link provided to help you find a retina specialist in your country, city or state.

Then give the office a call and make an appointment.
