Implantable Macular Degeneration Telescope
July 19, 2010
Hello

Implantable Macular Degeneration Telescope

Many of you read about the FDA approval last week for the implantable macular degeneration telescope. It is the first implantable eye device approved by the FDA.

According to the FDA website:

"In a 219-patient, multi-center clinical study of the IMT, 90 percent of patients achieved at least a 2-line gain in either their distance or best-corrected visual acuity, and 75 percent of patients improved their level of vision from severe or profound impairment to moderate impairment."

Cornea specialists who are trained by Vision Care perform the implant procedure. It is about a one hour out patient procedure. However training by a low vision specialist is required before the procedure is performed using a similar external device. More low vision training is needed after the implant as well.

Those who qualify for the implant must have end stage macular degeneration and no active bleeding for those with wet AMD. Both dry and wet forms of age related macular degeneration have an end stage.

To find out more about who is a candidate for this procedure and how to contact a Vision Care trained cornea specialist click here: Implantable Macular Degeneration Telescope
