Macular Degeneration Surgery as a Treatment Option
April 07, 2016
Hello

Macular Degeneration Surgery as a Treatment Option

Dr. Grazie Pertile, the department head of Ophthalmology in Negrar-Verona, Italy, is one of very few retinal surgeons who performs surgery for macular degeneration in select patients. The two surgeries she performs in patients with wet AMD are macular translocation and autologous choroidal graft transplantation. Autologous means the tissue comes from the patient and choroid is the retinal layer of blood vessels that feeds the retina and helps to remove waste products.

Autologous Choroidal Transplantation

Dr. Pertile received much of her experience in more severe retinal conditions at the Middelheim Hospital in Antwerp, Belgium where patients were referred to who experienced eye trauma, recurrent retinal detachments, retinopathy of prematurity and severe vision loss from wet macular degeneration.

Although the surgeries are reserved only for patients who meet certain criteria, most have experienced some kind of vision improvement. Find out more how this surgery works and who is a candidate for it here:
