What Stage is Your Macular Degeneration?
October 06, 2009
Hello

What Stage is Your Macular Degeneration?

My 83 year old father-in-law just saw his ophthalmologist this past Friday. Although he knew that his vision had been deteriorating, he was very saddened to hear that he was one of the 10-15% whose eyes had progressed from the dry form to the wet form, the most advanced stage of macular degeneration.

He certainly had many of the risk factors that contribute to the development and progression of this disease like:

1) Being a welder much of his life exposing him to blue light

2) A strong family history with 6 siblings who all had this retinal disease

3) A Diet low in greens and healthy fats

He was diagnosed over 10 years ago with the early stages of AMD and experienced a very gradual loss of central vision in both of his eyes.

If you or a loved ones has AMD, you may be wondering how does this disease progress. What are the stages and how do I know what stage my macular disease is in?

There are three stages and each eye may be in a different stage. They are:

1. Early AMD

2. Intermediate AMD

3. Advanced AMD
