What Does Lutein have to do with Macular Degeneration? March 23, 2010 |
Hello What Does Lutein have to do with Macular Degeneration?
Did you know that by increasing the concentration of lutein in the eye you may be able to help prevent age-related macular degeneration? Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two main carotinoids that are concentrated and found in the macular pigment. The macular pigment (MP) acts as a protective shield from the harmful effects of free radicals as well as blue light. “When we compared the amount of MP, which is comprised of lutein and zeaxanthin, present in the eyes of people with age-related macular degeneration to people without the disease, those with the lowest levels of carotenoid accumulation in the outer retina were significantly more likely to suffer from age-related macular degeneration than those with higher pigment levels, ” said Dr. Landrum from Florida International University.
MP can be increased through diet and/or supplementation. Currently there are several studies researching lutein supplements and lutein dosage. To learn more about these studies and how you can increase your macular pigment through eating foods high in lutein or through supplementation click here:
