Why Buy the Weakest Magnifier?
January 12, 2010
Hello

Why Buy the Weakest Magnifier?

Why buy the weakest magnifier if you have macular degeneration? As you start looking for low vision magnifiers you may be tempted to buy higher powered magnifiers than what you need.

According to Dr. Lylas Mogk, the author of Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight,

"Buy the weakest magnifier you can use without straining."

There is good reason for this. The higher the magnifying power, the smaller the lens, which means less viewing area.

Reading is much easier if you can see more words at one time. Dr. Mogk gives this example:

1. With a 2x magnifier you will be able to see the entire line

2. With a 5x magnifier you will see only the first four words

3. With a 7x magnifier you will only see the first two words, before you have to move the magnifier
