What Form of Lutein is Best Absorbed?
April 13, 2009
Hello

What Form of Lutein is Best Absorbed?

Most Americans do not consume the recommended daily amounts of lutein. High concentrations of the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, are found in the macular pigment. However, it has been found that those who do consume regular amounts of foods high in lutein or supplement, increase serum lutein levels and increase their macular pigment, which protects the macula. The macular pigment protects our eyes and especially the macula from ultraviolet light and blue light.

Increase your Macular Pigment

Increasing our macular pigment helps to reduce our risk for macular degeneration. It has been found that those with macular degeneration have low carotenoid levels in the blood.

FloraGlo Lutein is More Bioavailable

If you decide to supplement with lutein, look for the FloraGLO Lutein ingredient logo in your vitamins for eyes. Why?

1) Twice as bioavailable as lutein from spinach or lutein-fortified yellow carrots

2) It is a quality ingredient included in many lutein capsules for its stability and potency

3) Is used in many of the macular degeneration clinical trials

4) It is patented in the U.S., Canada and other countries

5) Safe - it has been used since the mid-1990's with no reported safety complaints.

6) The body cannot produce lutein. The only way the body can get lutein is by eating it in foods or by supplementing. It is found in the eye, skin, serum, brain and breast. It is especially concentrated in the macula, but also found in all of the retina, iris, ciliary bodies, and lens of the eye.

It is best to take your lutein supplement with a meal. Because it is a fat soluble carotenoid it is absorbed better when taken with small amounts of healthy fat, like olive oil or flax seed oil.

How Much Lutein

There are many vitamins for eyes that include FloraGLO lutein as their source of lutein.

Much of the research supports a daily intake of 6mg - 10mg of lutein per day either by eating food high in lutein and/or with lutein supplements. A large bowl of spinach has about 6 mg of lutein. If you decide you want to take lutein supplements be sure they have FloraGlo.
