Do You Have a Sedentary Job or Lifestyle?

My most recent nursing job required over an hour commute each way and sitting at a desk for 8 hours. I was concerned that all this sitting was harmful to my health. Even though I was active on weekends a recent study reports that a sedentary job and/or lifestyle is linked to many chronic diseases and early death - whether you are overweight or thin.

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study looked at the height, weight and waist circumference of 334,161 men and women. The participants were also given a questionnaire to determine their level of physical activity at work and at home.

The study followed these volunteers for more than 12 years. Those that were categorized as inactive (just less than 22.7%) reported a sedentary occupation and as having no exercise program or physical recreation.

Walking Works Wonders

According to the article, Exercise Lack Found Riskier than Obesity, written by Craig Weatherby, "Encouragingly, the analysis showed that modest increases in physical activity could have significant health benefits. The authors estimate that doing exercise equivalent to just a 20 minute brisk walk each day – burning between 90 and 110 calories – would reduce an inactive person’s risk of premature death by an average of 23 percent."
