Do You Know What CNV Is?
March 10, 2010
Hello

Do You Know What CNV Is?

If you've been checking the macular degeneration studies blog you may have come across some terminology that you're not familiar with.

Most people are aware of the two main types of age related macular degeneration - wet and dry. But both of these types of AMD have other names as well.

Today we will look at terms used for wet macular degeneration and next week we will focus on terminology for dry macular degeneration.

Other names for wet AMD include exudative macular degeneration, neovascular AMD, choroidal neovessels, and CNV.

CNV stands for choroidal neovascularization - it's a fancy name for new blood vessels growing from the choroid.

The choroid is a layer of blood vessels under the retina that feed the eye with nutrients and oxygen rich blood.

There are actually different types of CNV and many wet macular degeneration treatments are determined by what type of CNV a patient has.
