Hello

Dry AMD to Wet AMD - Can it be Prevented?

Can you prevent dry macular degeneration from progressing to the more serious form of AMD - wet macular degeneration?

According to retina specialist and author of Macular Degeneration: A Complete Guide for Patients and Their Families , Dr. Michael A. Samuel, states:

"Early, dry AMD can be prevented, slowed, and even reversed with diet and lifestyle changes. In its early stages, progression to blindness can be prevented with appropriate nutritional interventions."

As you know my tag line is Better Health for Better Vision. Changes that you make with your diet and lifestyle that benefits your body, benefits your eyes as well. One of the best ways to take care of your eyes is to maintain a healthy blood pressure.

The tiny blood vessels of the retina are easily damaged by high blood pressure. In fact high blood pressure is a main risk factor for dry AMD becoming wet AMD.

According to Dr. Michael A. Samuels, "If you have high blood pressure that is fairly well controlled, you have double the risk of wet AMD, compared to someone who does not have hypertension at all. If you have uncontrolled high blood pressure that goes above 160/90, you are three times more likely to develop wet AMD."

So even if your high blood pressure is under control with medications, your eyes (and the rest of your body) will benefit if you can get your blood pressure back to normal. Some of the best ways to do that is to exercise, lose some pounds if your are overweight, and make some changes in your diet.
