Hello

Read Easier with Large Print Books

Large print books are available for free from your public library, through large print book clubs, at book stores, on line or through font magnification on electronic book readers.

If you find that reading regular print is causing a strain on your eyes you may want to consider reading books that have a larger font and bolder print.

Big Print Books

The printing format for these books offer other features along with the larger font that benefit those with vision impairment. They are:

The Font Size

The font size is usually a 16 point font, but font size can go larger. Most book fonts use font sizes in the range of 10-12.

Bold Print

Bold print provides contrast making the words easier to see and read. When the letters are very dark and crisp, your reading will be more enjoyable.

Matte Paper

Matte paper is a paper that has no shine to it so that there is little or no glare.

Formatting

Special formatting allows more space around the words and more space between the lines for easier reading.

Where to Find Large Print Books

Local Libraries

Many local libraries carry these books. My local library has a large selection to choose from. So check with them first. If getting to and from the library is difficult for you, ask if they provide a home delivery service.

Book Stores

Book stores have a very limited selection of large print books. However, many of them will gladly order it for you.

On Line

It is especially easy to buy books with a large print format on line. You will find the largest selection from the comfort of your own home. If you are buying the book for yourself, sites like Amazon also offer used large print books for much less. Many sites offer free shipping if you purchase a certain amount.

Large Print Book Club

These books clubs appeal to those who love to read. Most require that a minimum number of books need to be purchased in a 1 or 2 year period. The reader selects the books they want to read. No books are automatically shipped to the member.

Electronic Book Readers

Electronic book readers can turn every book, newspaper and many magazines into a large print book. The font size can be adjusted to many different sizes. Once the initial investment is made, you actually have access to thousands of books for free - most of these electronic books are classics and are now considered public domain.
