5x Magnifier

A 5x magnifier can come in many different styles - from a large magnifying glass to a magnifying glass necklace.

Before you purchase your low vision magnifier there are two things to consider:

1) How long you will use it and

2) The power magnification that is needed.

Your low vision specialist can recommend the power that is best for you.

If the task is for just for a brief period of time like looking at a bill, reading a recipe, checking a label, or seeing a menu, then a hand held magnifier works well.

5X Magnifying Glass

If you are at the point that a 5x magnifying glass is the power that is most comfortable for your eyes, you will find that the assortment of macular degeneration magnifiers is not as prevalent as they are for say, a 2x magnifier. You may wonder, why is that?

Well, when the power of the magnifier increases, the size of the lens decreases. So for instance, you can get a full page magnifier with a large lens that measures 7" x 10", but it will only provide 2x magnification.

It's just the way magnifiers work. So you can find a 5x magnifying glass, but the size of the lenses that are available are smaller than magnifiers that offer 2-3X magnification.

Lighted Magnifying Glass

Consider a lighted magnifying glass so that you get light and magnification. As one's macular degeneration progresses, the need for light and magnification increases.

My father-in-law who has wet macular degeneration finds that a magnifying glass with light makes it easier for him to spot read and to see details.

What he also likes about this pocket size magnifier, is that it takes AAA batteries which are easy to find and easy to replace.

Hands Free Magnifier

When the task is for a longer period of time such as when working on a hobby, use a hands free magnifier.

This hands free magnifier uses a small stand to keep it in position with the added bonus of bright LED lights. The viewing area is 2.4" in diameter. It takes three AAA batteries.

Pocket Magnifying Glass

This handy pocket magnifying glass fits easily into anyone's purse or pocket. Made by Bausch & Lomb, you can count on a high quality lens. A wallet or pocket magnifier like this one has a small viewing area - 1.7' x 2.1" - it is meant for just a quick check on a price tag, a bus schedule, or a restaurant menu. Do not try to use something this small to read for any length of time.

It will last a long time and at $10 it is a small price to pay for a handy handheld magnifier.

Magnifying Glass Necklace

A magnifying glass necklace can be attractive and useful. Put it on in the morning and wear it all day to check recipes, the mail, a prescription bottle or a food label. You don't need to keep little magnifiers all over the house.

This necklace magnifier actually provides 4x magnification, but it had the highest reviews for clarity and quality. People especially liked that it was rimless for better viewing.
