10x Magnifier

A 10x magnifier comes in serveral styles such as a large magnifying glass or a pocket magnifier.

In order to buy the best magnifier for you, first determine:

1) What task you will use the magnifier for and

2) What period of time you will need to use it.

If it is for just spot checking or for a brief period of time like checking a bill, looking up an address, reading a label, or seeing a photograph, then a hand held magnifier is great.

If the task requires a longer period of time, like reading a book or working on a hobby, use a hands free magnifier.

It is best to have your low vision specialist recommend the magnifying power that you need. If that is not possible, buy the lowest power magnifier for you to read and see comfortably.

10x Magnifying Glass

You will need different magnifiers for different tasks.

The lower the power of the magnifier, the larger the field of view. The larger the power of the magnifier like a 10x magnifying glass, the smaller the field of vision. What this means is that the higher the power - like 10X - the less words or letters are in the view of the magnifier.

For this reason, you always want to select the weakest magnifier that you can use without eye strain.

Here is a set of magnifiers that include 6x, 8x and 10x magnifiers. The 10x has the smallest viewing size - that is typical with higher powered magnifiers.

Large Magnifying Glass

A large magnifying glass like this one from Amazon has a 2" field of view with a magnifying power of 10x. It uses real glass which makes it a little bit heavier than acrylic but also provides great optical clarity and quality.

This hand held magnifier is great for spot reading - any task that is for a short period of time, such as checking a prescription bottle, reading a water bill, or looking at a label.

It is not meant for tasks like reading a book or a newspaper. With a cost of under $4 keep one in different rooms of the house - the kitchen, the bathroom, or the office.

illuminated Magnifying Glass

The availability of good lighting will allow a person to use a lower powered magnifier than if there is poor lighting.

Have you noticed that when you were struggling to read something, that as soon as you put it under a bright lamp or brought it to a sunny window that all of sudden you could see it better?

Select a magnifier that also provides light. An illuminated magnifying glass makes it possible to read and see even if the area is dimly lit.

Amazon offers an illuminated magnifying glass for under $4.00. This one uses bright LED lights that automatically come one when you slide open the magnifier. This magnifier has a small viewing area - so it is only meant for quick, spot reading - like checking a price tag, a label or baseball scores- it is not for reading any length of time like a book or newspaper.
